To many, the development of CCTV in public areas, linked to computer databases of people's pictures and identity, presents a serious breach of civil liberties. Conservative critics fear the possibility that one would no longer have anonymity in public places.[111] Demonstrations or assemblies in public places could be affected as the state would be able to collate lists of those leading them, taking part, or even just talking with protesters in the street.
Nevertheless, multi-megapixel IP-CCTV cameras are coming on the market. Still quite expensive, but they can capture video images at resolutions of 1, 2, 3, 5 and even up to 11 Mpix. Unlike with analogue cameras, details such as number plates are easily readable. At 11 Mpix, forensic quality images are made where each hand on a person can be distinguished. Because of the much higher resolutions available with these types of cameras, they can be set up to cover a wide area where normally several analogue cameras would have been needed.
The home security market offers many plug-and-play equipment packages that center around an audible alarm to deter intruders who trigger a door or window sensor. They do not offer professional monitoring, so there’s no monthly service contract involved. Monitored home security systems cost between $20 and $60 per month. Although criminology research suggests most intruders flee at the first sound of an alarm, complete home security offers much more than just crime prevention. Protection from house fire or water damage, and assistance with medical emergencies should also be considered. In addition to providing more comprehensive protection, complete home security systems backed by professional monitoring services may also qualify customers for discounted homeowner’s insurance premiums. Modern digital still cameras can take 500 kb snapshots in the space of 1 second, and these snapshots are then automatically downloaded by the camera software straight to the computer for storage as timed and dated JPEG files. The images themselves don't need to stay on the computer for long. If the computer is connected to the Internet, then the images can automatically be uploaded to any other computer anywhere in the world, as and when the pictures are taken.

Organizations use CCTV to monitor the actions of workers. Every action is recorded as an information block with subtitles that explain the performed operation. This helps to track the actions of workers, especially when they are making critical financial transactions, such as correcting or cancelling of a sale, withdrawing money or altering personal information.
The range of a wireless surveillance camera, as in the distance it can transmit its signal, is anywhere between 100 and 500 feet, depending whether the signal is transmitting through open space or attempting to transmit between buildings or hills. Adding antennae can increase transmission range. Range of visibility is thing, and depends on the quality of camera. Cameras can have long-range visibility of 1,000 feet or more, although the quality depends on features such as optical zoom lens, night-vision capabilities, high definition PPF (pixels per foot), and long-range WiFi.
There were an estimated 30 million surveillance cameras in the United States in 2011.[61] Video surveillance has been common in the United States since the 1990s; for example, one manufacturer reported net earnings of $120 million in 1995.[62] With lower cost and easier installation, sales of home security cameras increased in the early 21st century. Following the September 11 attacks, the use of video surveillance in public places became more common to deter future terrorist attacks.[23] Under the Homeland Security Grant Program, government grants are available for cities to install surveillance camera networks.[63][64][65] In 2009, there were an estimated 15,000 CCTV systems in Chicago, many linked to an integrated camera network.[66][67][68] New York City's Domain Awareness System has 6,000 video surveillance cameras linked together,[69] there are over 4,000 cameras on the subway system (although nearly half of them do not work),[70] and two-thirds of large apartment and commercial buildings use video surveillance cameras.[71][72] In the Washington D.C.-area, there are more than 30,000 surveillance cameras in schools,[73] and the Metro has nearly 6,000 cameras in use across the system.[74]
The best placement of home surveillance cameras is typically over the entry points to the house--positioned to give a good view of all activity around that entry point, but too high up to reach. Since visible home surveillance cameras are proven to deter thieves, many people put several false or dummy cameras in prominent places around the home and yard, and place the real cameras so that they’re harder to see and/or reach. In addition to placing cameras above the front door, garage door, ground-level windows, and back door, experts recommend them for any exterior entrances to the basement as well.

I just finished upgrading all of my stock annke cameras with this model. The key difference with this bullet camera is it has a horizontal adjustment which allows you to tweak the field of view 1000% better than a camera without a horizontal adjustment. No clue why more bullet cameras do not have this very important feature. Also nice metal construction. Had to hold the button down for 5 seconds to the left to get correct mode not in black and white. Had to make the wire hole a little bigger to fit the huge selection device into the wall. Must be a better way to implement that. But it was just a little notch so not a deal breaker. Very good resolution - much better field of view vs the stock annke cameras and much better clarity at night. Hopefully these hold up over the years! Highly recommend.
On 25 July 2009, CCTV launched its Arabic-language international channel, stating that it aims to maintain stronger links with Arabic nations.[31] "Dialogue, China Story, Documentary, and Science & Technology Review" is a program that air on CCTV-A six time a day.[30] The Arabic Channel serves the Middle East, North Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region.[32][33]

It has been argued that problems of selection bias and endogeneity can be addressed by stronger research designs such as randomized controlled trials and natural experiments. A 2017 review published in Journal of Scandinavian Studies in Criminology and Crime Prevention compiles seven studies that use such research designs. The studies included in the review found that CCTV reduced crime by 24-28% in public streets and urban subway stations. It also found that CCTV could decrease unruly behaviour in football stadiums and theft in supermarkets/mass merchant stores. However, there was no evidence of CCTV having desirable effects in parking facilities or suburban subway stations. Furthermore, the review indicates that CCTV is more effective in preventing property crimes than in violent crimes.[30]
