While the terms are regularly used interchangeably, there is a slight difference between security cameras and surveillance cameras. The difference is whether a camera is passive or active. Surveillance cameras are passive. They observe and/or record whatever is happening in their field of view. Security cameras are active. They alert people to unexpected events within their field of view. This distinction can be very subtle or very large depending on the circumstances of a particular situation. For instance, if a surveillance camera sends a constant feed to a monitor that is continually viewed by a security guard, it is essentially functioning as a security camera because simply by viewing the feed from the camera the guard would be alerted to anything unexpected happening within its field of view. However, most modern security cameras have the ability to detect motion and send alerts to owners or authorities via text or emails.

Swann is a popular DIY security company with a good reputation, but this system has a few too many mixed reviews to earn it a higher spot in our rankings. It’s the least expensive CCTV system we reviewed, but some customers say installation is easy, while others have difficulties. Others have good customer support and some have poor experiences. However, Swann is a highly regarded company, so if you’re looking for a low-cost CCTV system, this isn’t a bad choice.

Very pleased. After purchasing many brands, I can say that I am very happy that Zosi delivered a quality product. The price is unbelievable, because the camera housing is rock solid and the mounting positions are infinite using their brackets. I purchased a brand Elec and the limited views and cheap materials caused a few cameras to break. These were sturdy, easy to screw into the house siding/walls, and deliver a crisp picture thru the dvr into my tv where I hooked it up. I prefer the bullet style because they are easier to mount and seem to have a wider viewing angle. This dvr is simple to use and work instantly with a hard drive that I bought separately and stuck inside with the 2 easy connections (which are pre installed in this unit). Even the wires connecting the cameras to the dvr are of a higher quality than ... full review
